Codex usage limits and when they reset

What each plan gets, how the two windows work, and the difference between a reset from OpenAI and your account’s own refill.

Limits by plan

How much you get depends on the model, the size of the job and where it runs, and OpenAI changes the allowances and prices. So this table shows the shape of each plan and leaves the current numbers to OpenAI’s pricing page. Which plans a reset reaches, and which windows it clears, is whatever the announcement says. The history page records the scope of each one.

Plan5-hour windowWeekly window
PlusRolling, and shared by local messages and cloud chatsA rolling seven-day limit on top of it
Pro 5×No five-hour limitRolling, seven days, on five times the Plus allowance
Pro 20×No five-hour limitRolling, seven days, on twenty times the Plus allowance

When does the Codex 5-hour limit reset?

A rolling window that starts with your first message, not at a fixed hour. Five hours after that first message the window closes and a fresh one opens on your next message.

It’s per account, so two people on one Business seat share it. Hitting it doesn’t touch your weekly allowance. You wait it out.

Neither Pro plan has a five-hour limit. On Pro, only the weekly allowance applies, and the 5× and 20× multipliers are weekly figures measured against Plus.

Where to see yours: run /status in Codex. It stays private to your account; we never see it.

When does the Codex weekly limit reset?

The weekly limit works as a rolling seven-day usage window. It is not anchored to the day you subscribed, and it is not a calendar week that turns over on a Monday.

The reset date it shows you can change. It moves after a reset from OpenAI, and after you use a banked reset: either one clears the weekly window, and the next seven-day window begins with your next Codex use.

Heavy agent runs consume it much faster than chat: a single long refactor can cost hours of the weekly pool.

When both windows are exhausted, only the seven-day window closing or a reset from OpenAI restores you.

Where to see yours: check Settings → Usage, or run /status in Codex, for your account’s current reset time.

Reset from OpenAI

Announced and out of turn

Someone at OpenAI clears the limits for a whole group of accounts, as a thank-you, an apology after an outage, or to mark a milestone. It comes at no fixed hour, it’s announced publicly, and it’s the only kind of reset this site forecasts.

The announcement says what it clears. Often both windows, sometimes only the weekly one. Clearing the weekly window restarts it, so the next seven days begin with your next Codex use. This is the only kind of reset we email about.

Plan reset

Your own clock, on schedule

Your rolling five-hour window and your weekly renewal. They’re predictable, they’re yours, and nobody announces them. Nothing on this site can move them or tell you more about them than /status can.

If your limits came back and no reset from OpenAI is recorded here, a normal window almost certainly closed.

Rate limits, usage limits, allowance

Three names for one counter. OpenAI’s announcement posts call it rate limits. Codex itself says You've hit your usage limit. or Usage limit reached. at the moment it stops you. The thing that clears it is a usage limit reset, and the pages here call what you have left your allowance. Whichever of those words you searched for, this page is about the same counter.

What time of day do Codex resets happen?

All 56 announcement posts recorded up to , sorted into the hour each was posted. Several posts can be about one reset. An announcement and a follow-up an hour later are two posts here and one reset on the history page. So this counts posts. The hours are Pacific time, OpenAI’s own clock, because an hour-of-day count can’t be moved onto your clock the way a single time can.

The record leans late. 21 of the 56 were posted between 15:00–18:00 Pacific time, a stretch that would hold about 9 if announcements fell evenly across the day. The 02:00–07:00 Pacific-time stretch holds 1.

That’s the past. It isn’t a schedule. A reset from OpenAI comes at no fixed hour, and the next one can land in any of those hours, including the empty ones.

"Common questions". (Same heading on the limits and banked pages.)

When does the Codex weekly limit reset?

Seven days after the current window started, not on a Monday and not on the day you subscribed. Because the window rolls, anything that restarts it moves the date you see.

When does the Codex 5-hour limit reset?

Five hours after the first message of that window, so it moves with you instead of landing on a fixed hour of the clock. Pro plans have no five-hour limit at all.

What time of day do Codex resets usually happen?

There is no fixed hour. The hour-by-hour count above shows the hours the record has seen, which is a record of what happened rather than a timetable for what comes next.

Can the Codex weekly limit reset early?

Yes. A reset from OpenAI that clears the weekly window brings that allowance back before your seven-day window would have closed. What each reset covers is named in the post that announces it.

Does a reset from OpenAI change my weekly reset date?

Yes, it can. Clearing the weekly window restarts it, and the next seven-day window begins with your next Codex use, so the date shown to you moves. The day you are billed is a separate thing and stays where it is.

Why did my Codex weekly reset date change?

Because the seven-day window restarted. A reset from OpenAI, or a banked reset you used, clears the weekly window. The next one starts with your next Codex use, so the date in /status moves with it. Nothing is wrong with your account.

Can I get a reset by asking support?

Not as a rule. Resets from OpenAI are issued in bulk, not per ticket, except where an incident affected your account specifically.

Why did my limit drain faster this week?

Cache-rate and efficiency regressions have caused this before, and were followed by compensation resets. Check the history page for that date.

Does upgrading mid-window reset me?

Upgrading raises the ceiling immediately, but the 5-hour window keeps running. You are not starting from zero used. Upgrading to Pro drops the five-hour window entirely and leaves only the weekly allowance.
